This book is the lineal descendant of The Handbook of British Birds and it used to be a five volume set. The many friends of ornithology whose names are acknowledged in its pages that we express our great indebtedness in this present volume.

The eventual need for a shortened version of The Handbook was foreseen from the start by H. F. Witherby and B. W.

Tucker who drafted the first outlines of it. It was to serve the needs of the field ornithologist, and give him, within the compass of a single volume, reliable and easily accessible information supported by coloured illustrations of birds and eggs. These plans were subsequently developed in detail by

B. W. Tucker with the present editor, and it was possible to obtain the benefit of Mr. Tucker's comments on the accounts of the earlier species before he died.”
