The Brothers Karamazov, the culmination of Dostoyevsky's work, was completed in 1880, shortly before his death. A story of parricide and fraternal jealousy profoundly involves the questions of anarchism, atheism, and the existence of God.
In the second volume of David Magarshack's modern translation Dmitry Karamazov is apprehended at the height of a wild orgy with his mistress and charged with the murder of his father, who has been robbed and killed by night. At the subsequent trial Ivan, his brother, throws the court into con-fusion, and the verdict which follows carries little conviction.
