Blurb: This book is a study of both military and social history of a Shenandoah Valley community that changed occupiers over 70 times during the American Civil War. Additionally, four of the war's large battles were fought in and adjacent to Winchester.
The town of Winchester Virginia changed hands more times during the Civil War more than any other town (seventy-two) and was witness to scores of battles, skirmishes, and raids. Winchester was a thriving business community prior to the war, and all the area's major roads and railroads converged on the town, making it a military target for both sides.
