In this incisive essay, Maxime Rodinson, one of the West's foremost Mideast scholars, argues that despite its unique fea-tures, Zionism fits into the general pattern of Western colonial-ism, and that Arab opposition to Israel is the opposition of a colonized people towards their colonizers.

Maxime Rodinson is the director of the Sorbonne's Ecole Prati-ques des Hautes Etudes and is a professor of Middle Eastern Ethnology and of Old Ethiopic and Old South Arabian lan-guages. He lived and taught in the Middle East for seven years and has maintained continuous contact with the area since World War II.

From a radical Jewish family, Prof. Rodinson is an independent Marxist scholar and writer. Among his other works in English are Israel and the Arabs, Islam and Capitalism, and Mohammed, as well as numerous contributions to scholarly journals, magazines, and encyclopedias.
