David was sure that Blair was dreaming about a dog. No dog could be that large or appear that silently, and only at night. Amanda, David's older stepsister, agreed with David, but of course Blair's twin, Esther, and Janie, somewhat older than the twins but younger than David, did believe in the dog. Dad said they were giving Blair's fantasies too much at-tention. And everyone in the family was told
in the dog.
that they must not encourage Blair to believe
David did not have much time to worry about Blair's dog, however. He had other problems, most of them concerned with Pete Garvey, the school bully. Somehow or other, David always managed to get tangled up with Pete and to wind up on the losing side. Now he was in worse trouble than ever, and most of his time and attention were given to avoiding Pete at all costs.
But Pete and Blair's dog seemed to turn up all the time, no matter what David or anyone else did to prevent it. And when these two problems were compounded by the possible presence in the neighborhood of two escaped convicts, armed and dangerous, David, Amanda, Blair, Esther, and even the ever-resourceful Janie had trouble dealing with all the difficulties that arose. Some of their solutions to problems are hilariously funny, some ingenious, and some downright dangerous.
But all lead to a surprising conclusion.”
