Blurb: "This was a great, informative read. It did a great job of introducing Igbo history from 800AD to the 1970s. However, I have two personal issues with this book.

1. The discussion of the impact of Christianity on Igbo culture and tradition was hindered by the focus on the non-Igbo actors. It also seems likely that the author’s religious leanings may have contributed to this. This is a common issue with colonial histories of African people, but I really hoped that this book would avoid this pitfall like it did in earlier chapters by centering the people as a whole, not just the miniscule population that converted initially.

2. The treatment of post-Biafran war reconstruction is incredibly puzzling. The idea that there was a neat, friendly reconciliation between Nigerians and Biafrans and that the economic and infrastructural reconstruction was immediate must be sourced from an alternative timeline because it is simply not true. I don’t know if this misinformation is intentional or merely due to ignorance of the actual occurrences of the time, but it really soured me on that chapter. This post-war period is incredibly important because, in addition to the pre-war conflicts, it set the scene for the social interactions between the igbos and their neighbors in 21st century Nigeria."
