Blurb: “THEY AND WE is a concise, informative introduction to the sociology of intergroup relations. It incorporates the principal concepts and findings of social scientists who have studied racial and ethnic relations in the United States. As the groundwork for his analysis of the contemporary scene, the author briefly reviews the history of American minorities from the days of the first settlement to the present and describes the successes and failures of various programs for integrating disparate peoples. Taking into account a growing body of theory and data on the dynamics of prejudice and discrimination, Professor Rose examines the nature of prejudice, the causes and consequences of intergroup conflict, and the reactions of minorities to differential and discriminatory treatment. He concludes with a very pertinent discussion of the shifting focus of intergroup research and provides an annotated list of selected readings.

PETER I. ROSE received his Ph.D. from Cornell Uni-versity. He is Chairman of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Smith College and a member of the Graduate Faculty of the University of Massachusetts. He has also taught at Goucher College, the University of Leicester (England), Wesleyan University, and the University of Colorado.

Professor Rose has written extensively on racial and ethnic relations in this country and abroad. He has recently completed The Subject is Race and Americans from Africa and is the editor of the Random House anthologies The Study of Society and The Ghetto and Beyond.”
