Blurb: “A new edition of one of America's best-loved stories THE HAUNTED BOOKSHOP by Christopher Morley
Illustrated by Douglas Gorsline
Designed by Warren Chappell
This new illustrated edition has been completely restyled and reset to give it a format worthy of its contents. For over thirty years The Haunted Bookshop, together with its companion piece, Parnassus on Wheels, has been an American classic.
The story finds Roger Mifflin once again being heard from in his own ebullient way.
Miffin has settled down from his travels described in Parnassus on Wheels, and now runs a second-hand bookshop in Brooklyn.
No ordinary shop this, as Miflin's sign which hangs outside the Gissing Street address will testify:
Among the livelier spirits who inhabit
"Parnassus at Home" are, besides Proprietor Mifilin: his ample and loving wife, Helen, fortyish and a legendary baker of chocolate cake; the radiantly lovely Titania Chapman, sent to live in the Mifflin household by her rich father in order to correct the evils of a finishing school education; the friendly dog Bock (short for Boccaccio); and a young advertising man, Aubrey Gilbert, smitten by Titania's beauty and eager to learn the world of books for her sake.
There are other spirits, too; most lively, if not alive. They are the great spirits of the literary past and their part in the story is too much fun to spoil by any foremention.
"Parnassus at Home" is indeed a haunted bookshop.
