For the Love of Dayton originally was published by the Dayton Daily News in celebration of Dayton's 1996 bicentennial. It now has been updated and revised to 2001. The book takes a year-by-year look at life in and around Dayton during the 205 years since settlers first set foot on the banks of the Great Miami River.

Front cover: After the great flood of 1913, pledges toward flood prevention were recorded on a three-story cash register on the Old Court House lawn. With a target of S2 million, the campaign lasted just over a month. The final total: $2.15 million.

Back cover: Baseball fans in 1919 got their World Series news from a giant scoreboard the Dayton Daily News hung on the side of its building. The game shown was part of the scandalous World Series between the Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago White Sox. It was later learned that the

"Black Sox" threw the series. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Chicago's

"Shoeless" Joe Jackson was leading his team with two hits.
