Using every reference source available the author covers the command's ill-fated march from Fort Brooke on Tampa Bay northward to Fort King-a march ended on December 28, 1835, by Seminole warriors.

The route of the march was through the heart of the Seminole Nation. The Indians, whose adamant refusal to move to the West had precipitated a crisis in the Florida Territory, had been waiting for a year to strike at the American forces. As Major Dade moved his command out of Fort Brooke on December 23, the Indians secretly watched the relief detachment along every step of the route, withholding attack until their dynamic leader Osceola could join them. But after five days of watching the sluggish detachment, the Indians could hold back no longer.

Dade and his men had begun to see the end of the march, and, thinking they had eluded the Indians, they relaxed their precautions. On the morning of December 28 the detachment moved into barren, open pine woods just southeast of the Wahoo Swamp. Unknown to the men and officers of the detachment, Seminole warriors silently formed a line along the road. The day was sharp-the men wore their overcoats over their cartridge boxes-but the soldiers were in good humor, especially since Major Dade had just promised them that they could belatedly celebrate Christmas when they reached their destination, only fifty miles up the road. Suddenly the Indians opened a blast of fire on the startled men, and Dade and half his command fell before they could make a defensive effort.

The survivors fell back to such cover as they could find. Using their six-pound cannon to keep the warriors at bay, the defenders constructed a triangular log breastwork into which they moved their dead and wounded. In time the six-pounder ran out of ammunition, and seeing this the Indians charged the breast-work. By four o'clock in the afternoon not a man in the detachment was left standing to defend himself. Only three members of the fallen detachment sur-vived; of these, two managed to struggle back to Fort Brooke, but only one, Private Ransom Clarke, lived to record the bloody holocaust that was Dade's Massacre.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0522/7685/4977/files/5222B7B6-F344-4393-B5C1-12DB74D5280B.jpg?v=1766370559
https://postmarkedfromthestars.com/products/massacre-frank-laumer-1991-4th-the-university-presses-of-florida-trade-paperback
